About Kerala

Welcome to Kerala, a land of coconut palms, trading ports, of spices, rubber, coconuts, and fertile paddy fields with the green green backwaters. No wonder! Kerala is one of the exotic, dazzling, one of the 50 must-see destinations as per the National Geographic magazine. The land abounds with beautiful temples with magical festivals.

The ancient system of medicine, Ayurveda, is still practised very effectively here. The majestic mountains of the Western Ghats in the east, the Arabian Sea in the west and the lakes and backwaters of Kerala all add to the greenery of Kerala. Hundreds of rivers flow from the mountains to the sea, making the landscape lush, fertile and ever-green. The tropical forests, rubber plantations, tea estates, spice gardens with cardamom, pepper, coffee etc. - in addition to paddy-fields, mango farms and coconut palms galore everywhere.

Kerala, “the land of coconut palms” is a place with tropical weather. Hinduism is the main religion and ancient temples dot the landscape of Kerala. There is a substantial population of Christians and Muslims. Christianity in Kerala dates back to 47 A.D. when St Thomas, one of the Disciples of Christ, came to Kerala and built 7 churches, before proceeding to Chennai. The oldest Jewish synagogue in the English-speaking world is in Cochin in Kerala. All the religions co-exist in perfect harmony – possibly because of the high standard of education among the population. The literacy rate in Kerala has risen to 100% over the last 10 years or so. Life expectancy and the infant mortality rate etc. are comparable to the West.
